Android - Applications for Rooted Devices

I have to admit, first thing I do with a brand new Android phone is to root it. In fact, the rooting possibilities of a device is one of my main selection criteria. Why ?

Answer is quite simple : Having a rooted phone allows you to install some very interesting applications, that will open a whole new field of possibilities.

These applications may allow you :

  • to navigate and modify your phone fielsystem (incuding the protected parts)
  • to remove all unwanted ads in many free applications
  • to backup/restore all your applications data (when changing phone or tablet for example)
  • ...

This article lists few very interesting applications to be installed on a rooted Android phone. Your only pre-requisite is to have a fully rooted phone.

If you hold a Google Nexus or a Motorola Moto G, you'll find some rooting guides in the Android section of this site.

1. Root Validator

android-icon-root-validatorOnce you've rooted your Android phone or tablet, this app will tell you if it is fully rooted, giving you few details about your su binary, super user application and busybox.

It can be installed straight from Google Play.

You just need to press the button Do I have root ?, to allow root access and to get the results.

If your device is fully rooted, all 5 sections should be green.

2. Busybox

BusyBox combines tiny versions of many common UNIX utilities into a single small executable. It provides replacements for most of the utilities you usually find in GNU fileutils, shellutils, etc.

The utilities in BusyBox generally have fewer options than their full-featured GNU cousins; however, the options that are included provide the expected functionality and behave very much like their GNU counterparts.

BusyBox provides a fairly complete environment for a small linux embedded system like an Android phone. You'll be able to use these tools  :

  • from a terminal emulator
  • from an ADB Shell session

It can be installed straight from Google Play.

During the installation process, once first analysis is over, make sure to select Smart Install. It will only add symbolic links to the utilities that are not already present on your phone.

3. Root Browser Lite

Root Browser Lite is a file manager that allow access to your whole phone filesystem, including the protected parts.

With this file manager, you'll be able to directly edit configuration files from protected parts of filesystem like /system.

Be careful ... you can brick your phone.

It can be installed straight from Google Play.

4. Adaway Ads Blocker

AdAway is a very nice application that removes the add banners you get with more and more applications.

As it work at the /etc/hosts level, it is a real transparent advertissement killer, running with any type of application.

The only problem is that it has been removed from Google Play. You must now download and install it from F-Droid.

You can either install it straight from your phone browser or thru some ADB console commands :

# wget
# adb install org.adaway_48.apk
6989 KB/s (2906148 bytes in 0.406s)
    pkg: /data/local/tmp/org.adaway_47.apk

You can now launch AdAway from your phone, enable the root access and follow the setup procedure.

After next reboot, your rooted Android phone should be fully ads proof !
