Ubuntu 10.04 - TrendNet N150 (TEW-648UB) wifi adapter on Lucid

TrendNet N150, also referenced as TEW-648UB, is one of the smallest and cheapest USB Wifi adapter available.

But this Wifi adapter is not working Out Of the Box under Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS.

NetTrend N150 adapter is powered by a Realtek RTL8192SU chipset, which is recognised by the latest 2.6 kernel, but needs a firmware which is not provided by the standard Ubuntu Lucid packages.

trendnet-n150-tew648ubThis article will explain the easy steps to make it work under Ubuntu Lucid.

It has been tested on Lucid x86 (32bits), but there is no reason that it should not work with Lucid AMD64 (64bits).

This wifi adapter is recognised Out Of The Box under Ubuntu Precise 12.04 LTS.

You can check that your adapter is having the right chipset by checking the USB device ID :

# lsusb
Bus xxx Device yyy: ID 0bda:8171 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

First thing to do is to update your Ubuntu Lucid Lynx to get the latest packages and the latest kernel. This article has been written using a 2.6.32-41-generic kernel.

You can easily check your kernel version with the following command :

# uname -a
 Linux my-desktop 2.6.32-41-generic #88-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 29 13:08:43 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux

Next step is to get the needed firmware files. They will be recovered from different places :

These files needsto be placed under /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU to be recognised by the system.

To do so, just type these commands from a terminal :

# sudo su
# cd /lib/firmware
# mkdir RTL8192SU
# cd RTL8192SU
# cp /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE/rtl8192sfw74.bin .
# cp /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE/rtl8192sfw492.bin .
# wget -O rtl8192sfw.bin

You now have the proper firmware files under /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU.

Everything is there to make your TrendNet N150 adapter work.

Just reboot your computer and enjoy !

Connexion has been tested on networks with WEP and WPA2 encryption.

Hope it helps.
